Nappy Waste Disposal

In 2018 the BBC reported that more than 3 billion nappies were used in the UK every day, with each nappy taking around 500 years to decompose.  Whilst in a domestic setting, you are able to dispose of your sanitary and nappy waste into the usual rubbish bin (not the recycling bin), in businesses we have a responsibility to manage such waste in a way that is environmentally responsible and compliant with the law.

The Environmental Protection Act 1990 – This legislation encourages employers to take responsibility to safely dispose and store all waste produced on their premises – including nappy waste. To demonstrate you’re following these regulations and protecting the environment, you must also obtain a completed duty of care certificate.

The Water Industries Act 1991 – In the past, many people disposed of sanitary waste by flushing it down the toilet. However, this led to numerous issues as a build-up of waste can block or damage pipes. The Waste Industries Act 1991 was put in place to ensure appropriate waste disposal methods are followed by businesses to dispose of sanitary waste and for nappy waste disposal.
